Go for creativity ,it pays
I scored an A in KCSE and I'm pursuing a Bachelor of Laws degree. I'm on long holiday, working as a legal intern with a firm in town. With a salary of 10,000 monthly, my job involves arranging the Senior Partner's office and carrying his briefcase to court. I have a friend who scored a B- and is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in Graphic Design. With his background in IT, he makes close to 10,000 a day designing corporate and personal websites.
I think we ought to draw a fine line between Academic Success and Financial Success. The two are mutually exclusive. Academic success does not guarantee you financial success. Hell no! There is this argument that we have perpetuated as a country; get an A, land a prestigious degree programme and get a good job. This is so far-fetched.
We need to emphasise on creativity and innovation. Not examination results. I'm not saying people shouldn't get As. What I'm saying is that those who score Cs shouldn't think it's the end of the road for them. You can achieve much more than the As. You just have to find out where your strengths lie.
I pass my exams but I refuse to be defined by them. I consider myself too brilliant to be defined by a single paper. Your ingenuity cannot be defined by an examination. It is unfair that after four years of studying, everything you learn gets down to a two-hour paper.
